French comedy show 'Call my agent' makes film comeback
French showbiz comedy series "Call My Agent" is back as a feature-length film with cameos from Hollywood stars George Clooney and Eva Longoria, with critics saying that for once, a movie made from a series has hit the mark.
The original series ran for four seasons from 2015, following talent agents at a Paris agency doing their best to manage sometimes complicated real-life French celebrities playing themselves.
The Netflix comedy sensation, whose original title "Dix pour cent" ("Ten percent") is a nod to the cut agents take from their clients, won an Emmy and inspired adaptations around the world.
In the new film, out on the streaming platform since Thursday, the same characters come back together years after their agency goes bust to help uptight agent-turned-director Andrea Martell, played by Camille Cottin, make her first film.
"At last: a beloved-TV-show-to-film-spinoff that doesn't suck!" British daily the Guardian wrote this week.
Entertainment industry bible Variety has described it as "fleet and fast-talking and packed, as ever, with Gallic industry in-jokes and celebrity cameos".
Guest stars include Clooney, who became French last year and lives with his family in southern France, and Longoria, who plans to direct a Spanish-language adaptation of the series.
"It's my favourite show," the American actor told French television in 2024 of the series, adding she and her husband had acquired the rights to adapt it for Mexico and Latin America.
Other offshoots include "Call My Agent: Bollywood" looking at India's entertainment industry and a new series produced by Brad Pitt's production house Plan B to follow sports agents.
